John studied abroad in Japan and recently has been volunteering as an after-school English tutor in Kentucky
John comes from a Presbyterian church family. He was active in youth group in the church where his mother was pastor and regularly attended summer church camp. In his late teens, John became a camp counselor at 2 different Presbyterian camps and provided staff leadership over the course of 5 summers.
Since his semester abroad in Japan during college at Centre College in Kentucky, he’s been involved in helping assimilate and nurture international students. His Senior thesis focused on that topic (thesis title: “Let’s Get Lunch Sometime”) and he continues to find ways to stay involved with the international community. For example, he volunteers weekly as an English tutor for two children from his host family in Japan via Zoom; and he volunteers in an after-school program twice weekly tutoring Hispanic and Chinese students who speak English as a second language.
John will be on board part-time on our church staff while he pursues a Master’s degree at Fort Lewis College. He’s excited to be a part of our staff and sees his main goal to be to ensure the kids he serves will remain active, learn the faith, have fun, and stay safe as they journey towards young adulthood.
